How to Pick Shrimp

Whether you like it crispy and fried or chilled and dipped in cocktail sauce, shrimp is a seafood that’s easy to fall in love with. They don’t take hours to prep and can be used as finger foods or to complete an entree. What’s not to love? The real question is: How do you know which shrimp to pick?

Here is a quick run-down of some of the different types of shrimp you will run into at the store and what to do with them.

1. White Gulf Shrimp

These shrimp are larger with a pale gray shell color. They have a mild flavor and tender meat, making them best for stews and curries. White gulf shrimp will soak in all of the flavors. Their big size makes them a good choice for grilling, too.

2. Rock Shrimp

Rock shrimp are closer in flavor and texture to lobster. They may be a little difficult to find at your average supermarket, but select seafood stores will have them. If you can get your hands on some rock shrimp, all you need to do is boil them and dip them in butter. They’re naturally flavorful and can be enjoyed without much work.

3. Pink Gulf Shrimp
